Lonely people are more likely to binge watch TV, study says

Everyone else says: “DUH.”

HEY EVERYONE, WE’RE lonely and depressed! At least, that’s according to a new study, which says people who binge-watch telly are probably down in the dumps.

Researchers at the University of Texas studied more than 300 18 to 29-year-olds and found that binge-watchers are most likely lonely, depressed, and lacking the “ability to control themselves”.

And everyone’s like:

A preview of the study, which is due to be presented next May, says that many people use binge-watching as a means of getting rid of “negative feelings” and that they were “unable to stop clicking ‘next’, even when they were aware that they had other tasks to complete”.

And to think up until now, we blamed good television for binge-watching.

The researchers also found that marathoning TV shows also lead to problems like obesity and physical fatigue:

Even though some people argue that binge-watching is a harmless addiction, findings from our study suggest that binge-watching should no longer be viewed this way. When binge-watching becomes rampant, viewers may start to neglect their work and their relationships with others.

If this research is getting you down, at least you know that binge-watching House of Cards will not make you feel any better in the long run. At least you have that.
